BEING TOGETHER.
Like a great universal theory of everything that incorporates all the principles of physics, science enthusiast Martin Bélanger wants to dispense with dividing and classifying genres, forms and consequently human beings so as to achieve what he terms “social communion”. He seeks a “total art” that is concrete and immanent, where dance and music join together in all their “physical manifestations” – whether high or low, private or social, ritual or profane, on the fringe or rooted in tradition – in a whirl that plays with convention and common practice. This is a unifying spectacle, a playful and festive celebration dominated by “the exaltation of being together, of being witness to each other and also to something created.” By deflecting, distorting and diverting the functions of objects, dances and genres in a sort of recycling, they are led into a new life, a new interpretation, a potlatch devoid of competition.
